Officials and advocates demand expanded probe into de Blasio’s NYPD security detail

De Blasio and his protective unit are facing heightened scrutiny after the Daily News revealed a former member of the unit testified under oath that its leader, Howard Redmond, was assigned the same hotel room as a female City Hall staffer while travelling out of town on official trips. The man who swore out the statement, retired NYPD Det. Karl Rugg, also said in his deposition that Redmond’s right-hand man, Lt. Karl Pfeffer, pocketed frequent flyer miles and other rewards accrued through official travel — which, if true, would appear to run afoul of city conflicts of interest rules.
